I named “Marvy Agate” for my dad who was the only person who knew where the rocks could be found:  “down in the Sinbad”. Today, I-70 between Richfield, Utah and Green River, Utah, passes just south of that stretch of desert. It’s a very rough section of Utah and it’s easy for me to believe that my dad was one of the few to have made the difficult trip before I-70 was built - back when getting there was a longer, rougher trip in from the north.

Marvy agate is a “seam agate”, not a fossil agate. It forms in limestone formations, not in softer shale like other southern Utah agates. The practical importance of this is that you can't simply break off the limestone with a few taps of your rock hammer. The agate will break first. (Trust me ... I learned this the hard way.)

To solve this problem, I "clean up" this agate using the same method I use for Utah Red Horn Coral -- Muriatic Acid. It really brings out the color and gets rid of the limestone.

This agate was a favorite for my dad. He polished a lot of it and I have a number of his cabs for sale too. All of the cabs in the picture are Marvy Agate. Send me a message if you're interested in one of the cabs. The grinning rock that I use for a logo is an exceptional piece of Marvy Agate.

If you're interested in more rocks, you can save a few dollars by combining several items in the same custom order and shipping in a cost-effective USPS flat rate padded envelope. Send a message before ordering so we can set up the order. I do a lot of my business through custom orders and I love to work with people to get just the right rocks they're looking for.
