The Rock and Coin Deal

ree

My dad was a collector of coins as well as rocks. I found this 1971 Eisenhower mint proof silver dollar in the family home. I took it to a coin dealer, but they offered much less than I think it’s worth – just the “melt” value of the silver in it. (40% for this special edition). As a special mint proof coin, it’s simply beautiful and I hate the idea of such a beautiful thing being melted down just for the silver in it. The eagle landing on the moon on the reverse is even more beautiful than Ike. There’s a cutout in the back of the case showing the eagle. So, I decided to see if any of the rock collectors out in the world were like my dad and offer it along with a purchase of rocks.

I checked out my standard for prices, Ebay, and just as I expected, people there were trying to sell them for more than they’re worth. Ebay isn’t the only one ripping people off. In the review of this coin at Coinweek.com, they stated that one sold for $13,800 at the Heritage auction site just two years after issue. The 1971–S Eisenhower proof coins at Ebay sold for between $100 and $400 in general. Check it out for yourself. The case on mine is in better shape than the cases I saw at Ebay. When I found it, it had never been out of my dad’s dresser drawer.

According to Coinweek.com:

“The United States Mint sold silver-clad Eisenhower Dollar proofs from 1971-1974, a faux woodgrain box with a gilded seal at the bottom right. A flocked red velvet shell fitted to the bottom of the box held the coin.” The coin is also protected by a plastic display case.

(On the other hand, someone bought a banana taped to a wall with duct tape for $6.2 million quite recently. At auction. Technically, the billionaire bought the right to tape a banana to a wall and call it “Comedian”. Two others – the article didn’t provide details – sold for “between $120,000 and $150,000, according to the gallery handling sales”. Is anyone surprised that the person who paid $6.2 million made his money in cryptocurrency? There’s something seriously wrong with a society where something like that can even happen.)

So, what is the deal? (I hear you asking.)  Here it comes …

I will include this coin in its original case, just as pictured, for the first person to place an order of $100 or more. (No … I DO NOT raise my prices for these one-off deals. That would take some time and effort and I’m much lazier than that.) The deal is limited to just this coin. If you’re only ordering to take advantage of this deal and someone else beat you to it, I’ll refund your entire purchase price, including shipping. (I’ll let you know before I do anything so you can make the decision.)

Please let me know if you are doing “the deal” so I can be sure to enclose the coin or let you know that it’s gone. People do place orders for more than $100 without “the deal”.  (I can almost remember when a trip to the supermarket would cost  less than  $100.)
